1278 - The Market in Charmouth

By the later 13th century a settlement almost certainly existed in Charmouth. For in 1278 the Abbot of Forde was granted a weekly market and a yearly fair at Charmouth (in lieu of another recently granted market) [Cal. Ch. Rolls]; (2) in 1286 the Abbot held one fee at Charmouth of John Beauchamp, worth 100s. [Cal. of Inq.: S&D N&Q IX (1905), 241];
