HINTON CHARTERHOUSE VILLAGE NEWS (page 16)
HINTON CHARTERHOUSE WI
THERE was a good attendance at the September meeting of the Hinton Charterhouse WI and the President, Brenda Frankham, welcomed everybody. The meeting was started with arrangements for the Group Meeting to be held in Hinton Charterhouse on October 14, with Stephanie Cole as the guest speaker. Mrs Linda Sellars will be addressing the October meeting, whose subject is "Hello Sailor". The business of the meeting was swiftly conducted and concluded with the sad news that Brenda Frankham would be leaving the area. The members thanked her for all her efforts on their behalf. The speaker for the evening was Mr Coles from the Bath Sausage Shop. He was an interesting and amusing speaker. The first mention of sausages is thought to be in Roman times, when they were preserved with salt. Sausages these days must have at least 65% meat. Many mass produced sausages conform to this by using reconstituted meat product and large amounts of rusk. Rusk is necessary for sausage making as it is a bulk and binding agent. The Sausage Shop uses natural skins, which are pork intestines and have to be scrubbed inside and out. Members were treated to a demonstration with a hand cranked machine of how to put sausage meat into sausage skins. Alison White volunteered to help, and after donning the appropriate clothing produced a creditable chain of sausages. Members were then treated to a tasting session. Brenda Frankham thanked Mr Coles for an extremely stimulating talk.
The AGM on November 13th will start at 7.15pm and the speaker is Mrs Vivien Brindsdon of Sightsavers International.
