Thomas Joyce and his
wife Frances had three children-John, Frances and Caroline. The eldest John, died
at an early age whilst they were in Bradford-upon- Avon. Later in 1796 the family
moved to Freshford House (Manor) and lived there until the death of Thomas in
1817. With the lack of a male heir to inherit his large Estate, Thomas would have
been pleased when his eldest daughter married the son of his eldest brother John
Joyce in 1812. His other daughter Caroline, had married Rev James Evans two years
earlier. Frances and John Joyce had six children between 1816 and 1826. For a
short while after the death of her father the family continue to live Freshford,
but by 1820 the house has been let to Major Kervan and the Joyce's have moved
to I Park Place in Coombe Down, Bath. The couple during this period appear to
separate and John Joyce is no longer heard of until his death in 1860 at Ramsgate.
All references to property transactions and directory entries are to Mrs Joyce
and not her husband. She moves with her children to 3 Woodlands Place, Bathwick
Hill by the time of the 1841 Census. Finally she is shown at 7 , Lansdowne Place
in the 1861 Census, living with her sons- Thomas and Rev. Frederick Joyce. She
dies in 1866 leaving her estate in Freshford to her eldest son. Her husband had
died six years earlier at the Paragon in Ramsgate leaving his properties in Freshford
to his daughter Caroline.
